‘Spamdexing’ is search engine SPAM (stupid pathetic annoying message). There are a number of ways ‘Black Hat SEO’ firms and those who engage in illegitimate forms of search engine optimization attempt to trick the search engines in an effort to gain top rankings in the search engine results pages (SERPs).
Some of the ways to watch out for are:
-
Optimizing a web page to rank well for popular terms, that is keywords and phrases with high search volume that have nothing to do with actual content on the page or at the website. Dishonest affiliate marketing content sites that make money from clicks, some pornography websites, and even some gambling sites have been known to use this technique.
-
Invisible text, hidden links, and keyword stuffing are other ways to trick the search engines by using keywords in illegitimate ways
-
Doorway pages and re-directs that send users automatically to another website that has nothing to do with the search terms they used to search
-
Cloaking and multiple web pages that have more or less the exact same web content and are set up to link to each other to create a false “link popularity” to boost rankings.
There are stiff penalties for ‘spamdexing,’ including being banned from the search engines and lawsuits if you engage in practices that compromise the integrity of the affiliate marketing program or produce false earnings based on illegitimate clicks.
