‘Relevance’ is a term applied to many aspects of search engine optimization. Obviously the term itself implies that two or more related items are pertinent to and connected with each other. Relevance is important to search because the objective of a search engine is to match successfully links to content that satisfies the search query made by the person using the search engine to find what he’s looking for.
A search consists of a person typing words into a search query box. These words become the basis for determining relevance and greatly influence the way in which a search engine indexes and delivers content. As a result, it is the objective of the website owner who wants to rank well in the search engines to ensure that all ‘on-page elements’ and ‘off-page elements’ of each web page maintain relevance to the keywords and phrases for which the web page is optimized. See ‘On-Page Elements’ and ‘Off-Page Elements’ for more information.
