Business Development Tips: What is Keyword Spamming?

Spam refers to information that is received unsolicited. Keyword spamming, also known as ‘spamdexing’ and ‘search spam,’ is a Black Hat seo technique used to trick the search engines and often users through the illegitimate and dishonest use of keywords to establish an expectation for one type of information but instead deliver another, unexpected type of information.

The purpose of a search engine indexing system is to establish a protocol for the delivery of relevant information to match a specific search query typed by a user. Search engines like Google use complex mathematical algorithms to combat malicious and illegitimate search engine optimization practices and maintain the integrity of their search results. No one search engine property is immune to keyword spamming because it is achieved in a variety of ways that are not always immediately filtered out by the indexing protocol. For this reason, if a search engine discovers a web page that is utilizing keyword spamming it will be permanently banned from the search engine and the owner possibly sued.

Although there are numerous ways to implement keyword spamming, some of the identifiable ways include:

  • Repeating unrelated phrases
  • Invisible text
  • Doorway page that quickly re-directs to an unrelated page
  • Irrelevant keywords and phrases in the meta tags
  • Misleading information in the HTML tags that does not accurately reflect the document’s content
  • Use of keywords unrelated to the document content in the URL (domain name)

These are but a few of the many keyword spamming practices that can harm your business. Don’t fall victim to illegitimate, unprofessional seo practices that put your business in jeopardy. Work with a legitimate firm that can demonstrate its track record and help you to understand the processes it undertakes to enhance your search engine rankings.
