Doorway pages represent an illegitimate, black hat search engine optimization technique that creates a false gateway to web page content that the user isn’t expecting. The doorway page is set up to index really well for a particular search term. When a user clicks on the page generated by the search term he typed he is quickly re-directed to another page with content he wasn’t expecting. These types of pages are usually easy to identify because they are not designed to be user-friendly; however, black hat companies are becoming more sophisticated and beginning to incorporate elements of user-friendly website design and just enough actual content to appear legitimate. A simple call to action prompts the user to go the irrelevant web page and be exposed to its content unwittingly.
