A bot, also called a ‘search engine spider,’ ‘search bot,’ and ‘web crawler’ is really a computer program that is designed to scan and copy web content that will be indexed by the search engines and eventually delivered to end-users.
A very important objective of search engine optimization is to ensure every page of your website is search engine ready. That means that the programming code, links, images, url strings, style sheets, title tags, all on-page content and all off-page content is free from errors or anything that would keep the search engine bot from accurately and completely scanning your web page content.
In cases where your web content is not meant for public view, ‘robot exclusion tags’ are used to keep your secured data out of the reach of the bots. These tags are also used strategically in search engine optimization to ensure a web page with many links on it does not become diluted but remains highly focused for the search terms it is being optimized for.
