Business Development Tips: What is Anchor Text?

‘Anchor text’ is the visible, brief text (about 60 characters maximum) used in a hypertext link that points to a specified ‘url’.

Although there are many applications of ‘anchor text,’ it is often used on a website to guide a site visitor through the site conversion process by providing a specified ‘call to action.’ For example, your site conversion goal may require your site visitor to submit a contact form online. The ‘anchor text’ used to guide the site visitor to the form may read: ‘Submit an RFQ for door fasteners now using the online form.’ The preceding ‘hypertext link’ points to the online form that the ‘anchor text’ is instructing the site visitor to submit to make a request for quote for door fasteners. The search engine optimized ‘anchor text’ includes the keyword phrase “door fasteners” and identifies the form to which it points, fully informing both the search engines and the targeted site visitors.

‘Anchor text’ is a great tool for replacing a url string (e.g.: http://www.aimg.com/contact.cfm) with search engine optimized text (e.g.: Contact AIMG using our convenient online form) that is informational both to the search engines and site visitors.
