Business Development Tips: What are Meta Tags?

Meta tags, in the simplest of terms, refer to the special way in which data about an HTML document, also known as your web page, is recorded for the search engines.

Meta tags are placed in an HTML document between the opening <head> and closing </head> tag.  Meta tags include meta data, which is the text that provides specific information about your HTML document. Meta tags look like this:

  • <title>Business Development Tips, SEO & Effective Marketing Strategies</title> – title of the page as it appears in your web browser
  • <meta name=”description” content=”A site devoted to helping business owners make the most of their online marketing, seo and website opportunities.” /> – a description of the page content
  • <meta name=”keywords” content=”business development, marketing tips, seo” /> – although not part of a search engine’s indexing algorithm anymore, it is still a good idea to include them to ensure your page content remains highly focused on the keywords listed here, which shoukd be the ones in your strategic campaign for this page
  • <meta name=”robots” content=”index, follow” /> – Meta Robots Tag is used to allow or deny the search engine bot access to scan and index the web page content
Search engine optimization ensures that all relevant meta tags contain the ‘meta data’ the search engines are looking for to help them scan and index your web page content. See ‘Meta Data.’
